Theodore Roosevelt National Park 57th Annual Bird Walk & Chuckwagon Breakfast

Birders Annually Flock to Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The 57th annual Theodore Roosevelt National Park Bird Walk and Chuckwagon Breakfast will be held Sunday, June 5, 2011, in the park. Participants will gather at 6:30 am.MDT at Cottonwood Campground for the event.

The birdwalk is open to novice and seasoned bird watchers (commonly called birders) to gather and identify birds within the park. In the past, participants have been able to observed between 40 and 50 different species of birds in just one hour. The park interpreters and area birding club volunteers guide groups through different habitats in and around the campground.

Records kept over the years reveal over 200 species of birds have been identified. The Cottonwood Campground site is one of the better birding spots in the area with upland prairie, the Little Missouri River, and the woodland areas providing habitat for a variety of species and great birding opportunities.

The park has a detailed birding checklist and other resources available at the visitor center that will help people find areas for certain species. Birding is a wonderful way to explore anyplace on your summer travel itinerary and a fun family activity. For more information on Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Theodore Roosevelt Nature & History Association events, activities and summer highlights visit us on the web at www.nps.gov/thro and www.trnha.org.

The June bird walk participants are also welcome to participate in the annual Chuckwagon Breakfast at the Cottonwood Campgrounds. This annual feed takes place immediately following the Birdwalk, approximately 8:00 a.m. (MDT), at the campground picnic area. The menu includes buttermilk pancakes, country sausage, cowboy coffee and an assortment of tasty syrups.

Reservations for the breakfast are appreciated to be sure there is enough food for all. Please call 701-623-4884 or 701-623-4466 or email info@trnha.org to let us know you are coming.

"A Local Legacy" is theme for 27th Annual Dakota Cowboy Poetry Gathering
The 27th annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering will be held Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, at the Medora Community Center. The theme this year is “A Local Legacy”, according to Bill Lowman, founder and director of the show.
"My big thrust is to preserve, record and enhance American cowboy culture and this is a good way to do it,” Lowman said. “It brings people from all walks of life, that have a tie to ranch life and cowboy culture and stuff and brings them together to celebrate this every year."
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 12 noon on Saturday. Lowman said he expects about 25 singers and poets who want to share their artistic work will perform during an open microphone session from 1-4:30 p.m. on both days. Each evening features a professional show at 7:30 p.m.
There are over 20 poets and singers who will be featured during the evening performances. Saturday night entertainment will feature Elizabeth Ebert, Pat Mead, Greg Hager and Ann Secrest Hanson. Sunday night entertainment will feature Wally McRae, Brent Voight, Bill Lowman and Ron Crowley.
Master of ceremonies for Saturday is Merril Piepkorn of Fargo, ND. Piepkorn is the host and Executive Producer of Dakota Air: The Radio Show, an old fashioned traveling radio variety show, performed in front of a live audience, recorded and played back on the radio. Bob Peterman of Wibaux, MT. will be Sunday's emcee.
On Sunday morning, Country Gospel Music will be the featured. "From nine to noon Sunday morning, and this isn't church, it's just round robin cowboy gospel singing. It just packs them in. It's really beautiful.”
During the Poetry Gathering participants can browse the Art Show taking place during the event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10-4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Individuals wanting more information can contact the Medora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at 701-872-4830 or Lowman at 701-872-4746.

2013 Medora to Deadwood Trail Ride

MEDORA, ND -- A historic trail ride connecting two Dakota towns rich in history and lore begins the last half of the route this summer. The historic Medora (ND) to Deadwood (SD) trail took riders from North Dakota’s western buttes and Little Missouri River country to the Wild West town of Deadwood in South Dakota’s Black Hills in the late 1880s. Now, modern day trail riders have a chance to retrace the same path.

The southern route from Buffalo, SD to Deadwood was completed last summer from August 25- September 1, 2012. The northern route will be from Buffalo, SD to Medora, ND beginning in Buffalo on August 31, 2013 and ending in Medora on September 7, 2013. While travelers In the 1880s took the journey in one shot, present-day organizers are splitting the lengthy trek into two segments in hopes of enticing even more horsemen and women to make the journey.

The 1880s were a time in the west when all roads led to Deadwood for the gold rush, brought to light by General George Armstrong Custer’s army and the get-rich-overnight reports of miners from all walks of life. Hearing the reports, aristocratic French nobleman Marquis de Mores established his own stage line from Medora to Deadwood. He charged 10 cents a mile. The route followed the Badlands to the Black Hills and Deadwood,

Relay stations were set up every 10 to 15 miles along the route for team changes and passenger breaks. Perhaps some of the passengers were keen on getting rich in the gold rush, but many historians believe this stage was used mainly as a tourism shuttle between two western cities from 1884 to 1886. In 2013, visitors can once again be part of the journey.

The Billings County Museum and North Dakota Tourism have teamed up to facilitate this historic reenactment ride. One of the organizers of the ride is Kim Shade of Medora, who ranches just south of the original trail near Medora.

Shade and his family are enthusiastic about helping to organize the trail ride. “Men and women risked a lot back in the day to travel from Medora to Deadwood. The risk vs. reward scenario was likely not much of a consideration for these travelers. It’s quite enticing to say the least. I am excited about the opportunity to revisit the history of the original trail, which passed near our ranch,” Shade said.

Shade and other organizers are looking for teams and riders to join them on this historical ride. The Billings County Museum and Medora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau are coordinating the North Dakota entries. North Dakota Tourism has provided a grant to support this reenactment.

The ride is a joint effort of the Days of ’76 Museum in Deadwood and the Billings County Museum in Medora. Registration forms can be found at www.medorand.com or www.daysof76museum.com. More information is available by calling the Billings County Museum at 701-623-4830 or the Days of ’76 Museum at (605) 578-1657.
